About the Elections:
The City of Newberry conducts its own elections and qualifies its own candidates. The City relies on the the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections for backup support and equipment. The City Clerk overseas all municipal elections. Elections are defined by the City Charter in Article VII.
Number of Members. The City of Newberry’s Mayor and 5 Commission members are elected city wide. The Mayor shall also be elected at large, citywide.
Terms. The members of Commission shall be elected to two year staggered terms of office and shall serve until their successors are elected and qualified.
Qualification Mayor. To be eligible for election or appointment and service as Mayor, a person must be a minimum of 21 years of age, be a resident of the City of Newberry for one year prior to the date of qualifying, and a registered and qualified voter of the City of Newberry at the time of qualifying. Qualifications of the Mayor is defined by Article III Sec. 8 of the City Charter.
Qualifications Commission member. In order to be eligible to hold office as a Commissioner and serve as a Commissioner, a person must be a resident of the City, and be a registered and qualified voter of the City at the time of qualifying. Qualifications of Commission members is defined by Article IV Sec. 15 of the City Charter.
