Mayor And City Commission

The City of Newberry is governed by the Council-Manager form of government. Voters elect five Commissioners and a Mayor. The Mayor serves as the Chair of the Commission and does not vote. The commission sets the policies and rules by which the City operates, and imposes taxes. The Commission establishes the vision and long range plans for the City. The Commission also serves as the City utility board; setting electric, water, sewer, and refuse removal rates. The City manager is appointed by the Commission and serves at the pleasure of the Commission. The Mayor serves as the official head of the City for civil processes, and executing legal documents and is the ceremonial head of the City government.

Regular city commission meetings are typically held twice a month to conduct city business and provide citizens with an opportunity to participate in the government process. In addition, the commission meets for workshops on specific issues. The city commission appoints three officers (City Attorney, City Clerk, City Manager) to administer the duties of the city.
