The City of Newberry is upgrading
your utility system!

We’re switching to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system that will give residents and customers more information and control over your utility usage.

Starting in May, we’ll be installing new meters that make this system possible. Once your home or business is switched over, you’ll have access to new tools through our online portal.

What are Advanced Metering Infrastructure Systems?

Advanced Metering Infrastructure Systems are a modern solution to reading information from utility meters scattered across the city.

Instead of sending an employee out to read your meter once a month, we’re upgrading your meter to a communicating smart meter. Usage data will be automatically transmitted to the city over a secure private network and we’ll provide that information to you online! This system ensures accurate readings, quick response times to leaks or power outages, and hour-by-hour usage information to help you lower your electric and water usage.

FAQ

Why is Newberry changing its meters?
One of the biggest frustrations we hear from Newberry residents is the price of their utility bills. We can not change the cost of your utilities; those are set by an external agency. But we can empower you to understand your usage and build smarter energy habits.
Why did Newberry decide on an AMI?
AMI are already present in Florida cities such as Ocala, Lakeland, and Orlando. The City Commission determined it was in our residents best interest to install an AMI, giving our residents more control over their utility usage and bills. Upgrading the system allows us to remove older meters, access readings without sending someone into the field, and provide insights to residents that can help them conserve energy.
How do the new meters work?
Your new meters will be equipped to communicate with the City of Newberry. Your usage data will be sent over a private network, accessible only through your online portal.
How will the new meters benefit me?
With the AMI, you’ll be able to set up notifications about your usage, view a breakdown of your usage online, and more!
How can I access the data from my meter?

You’ll be able to access your data through our online portal 1 week after your smart meter has been installed. If you’ve accessed your utility bill online before, use the same Account Number and Password you’ve used before. For more information about setting up access for the first time, check out our step-by-step instructions.

What notifications can I set up through the portal?
You can set up a number of notifications related to your utility usage. These include alerts about outages, higher than normal usage that could indicate energy or water waste, alerts after meeting a certain daily usage threshold, and alerts when any usage occurs while you’re away from your home.
How much will the new meters cost me?
No direct impact upon cost of utilities. Meter installation will be free of charge in our commitment to improve our city.
Will this affect my utility bills?
If you had a faulty meter that wasn’t reporting your usage correctly, you might see an increase in your bill that reflects the more accurate reading. If you have a concern about an increase in your bill related to the new system, contact us at (352) 472-2161, ext. 1.
What information is being transmitted?
Your meter will only transmit data related to your utility usage: meter numbers, energy usage readings, and diagnostic information. No personal data is collected or transmitted.
How can you be sure these meters will be accurate?
Your new meter will be vigorously tested for accuracy before it arrives at your home. At the factory, it will be tested using calibrated reference standards to produce meters that are accurate every time. If you have any concerns about your meter’s accuracy after it’s installed, contact us at (352) 472-2161, ext. 1.
What can I do if I believe my meter is inaccurate?

First, log on to the online portal to make sure your meter reading matches up with what you see online. If your bill or reading is higher than you expected, investigate when the usage occurred. If you can identify where the increased usage came from and can relate it to your activities, your meter is doing its job. If you still have concerns about inaccuracies or an energy/water issue, contact us at (352) 472-2161, ext. 1.

What will the AMI system change about my utility bill?
The AMI system will not change your utility rates, but it will provide insights about your utility usage. If you’d like to lower your electric or water usage, you’ll be able to do so by seeing what days and times you’re using the most electricity and water.
