Elsa

Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to make landfall as a hurricane sometime on the morning of Wednesday, July 7. Tropical-storm-force winds are expected in Alachua County in the mid-morning hours until the late afternoon. The strongest winds are expected west of I-75, and in open areas like fields and lakes. Hurricane-force winds are not expected in Alachua County. Homeowners should clear their yards of debris and items that may be picked up by the wind and cause damage to homes. Those who live in a flood-prone area or feel their home is unsafe should consider staying with family, friends, or in a hotel.

Other than essential services, all City of Newberry offices and parks will be closed tomorrow, July 7. These closures will continue until staff verifies that conditions are safe. Solid waste collection for Wednesday has been suspended.

The City of Newberry is preparing for Tropical Storm Elsa to make landfall and encourages customers to take precautions to protect their families and homes, as well as prepare for power outages. Residents experiencing outages should report them using our online reporting tool (click here) or by calling 352-472-2161. Once winds reach 35mph sustained, it will no longer be safe for us to dispatch our crews. A single gust of wind can overturn our equipment. As soon as it is safe, we will begin to assess the damage and begin restoration.

Alachua County has activated the 311 Critical Information Line. This line is for the latest storm updates. Those who have a medical or law enforcement emergency should call 911. For non-emergency law enforcement issues, call 352-955-1818.
