Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste must not be placed on sidewalks or on the street surface. Yard waste collected in our community is recycled as a soil amendment and mulch. Please do not contaminate yard wastes with garbage.

Residents are permitted to dispose of a maximum yard waste volume of 128 cubic feet each week (total pile size must not exceed 4 ft high by 4 ft wide by 8 ft long). This is equal to 30, 30 gallon bags.

Yard waste must be placed adjacent to the curb within 10 ft of the driving surface.

Yard waste includes:

  • leaves
  • grass clippings
  • and small tree limbs

Yard wastes do not include:

  • boards
  • lumber
  • construction materials
  • remodeling demolition debris

Limbs must be:

  • less than four (4) feet in length
  • smaller than four (4) inches in diameter
  • and weigh less than 40 lbs

Loose yard waste must be containerized in a garbage container or in paper trash bags.

Yard debris that is not containerized or bagged must by bundled or stacked in such a fashion as to facilitate easy collection.
The City’s waste collection contractor will not collect yard waste:

  • placed adjacent to vacant lots
  • placed in plastic bags
  • contaminated with garbage, construction debris, or other non-yard waste materials
  • generated by tree surgeons, landscape maintenance contractors, or other commercial enterprises

Residents may contact Waste Pro at (386) 462-2500, or another solid waste service provider, to obtain a price quotation to remove yard wastes that exceed the criteria outlined above or that was generated by a tree surgeon, landscape maintenance contractor, or other commercial enterprise.

Remember, the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of the yard waste material you generate is to recycle it at your home. For free information and backyard compost bins, contact Alachua County’s Waste Management Division at (352) 374-5213.
